Hi, friends! Next week we’ll dive back into the business of publishing (you can see the posts that kicked off the discussion here and here). But last week I attended Thrillerfest (incredible!) and talked with approx. 3 million (awesome) writers in all stages of the author journey, and one theme kept popping up:
Authors aren’t sure what falls under our publishers’ purview and what we’re expected to do on our own.
We all kinda feel like we’re supposed to do everything (and, yes, being an author is a 360-degree job). But your publisher is also there to support you (that’s why you’re only pocketing, like, 10% of book sales).
So I’m keeping this simple: 17 things, big and small, that you can request from your publisher. The worst thing they can say is no, and you won’t sound ridiculous inquiring about any of them, because this is stuff other authors (and not just mega bestsellers! Normies!) have received. Now you know!
