OH HI, subscriptions are on sale (and make a perfect gift)!

We’re a week out from Black Friday, and while I’m generally trying to resist the urge to buy needless stuff this year (the videos of tossed-out clothes piled on the beach in Ghana really did it for me), I’m getting in on the spirit with a subscription sale.

If you’ve been on the fence about subscribing to Get It Write, now’s a great time: For less than $5 a month, you’ll get dishy author interviews, craft essays, marketing tips, and behind-the-scenes publishing intel. Enjoy 15% off an annual subscription when you subscribe by December 2—Cyber Monday.
Did you know you can gift someone a Substack subscription? I’m biased, but I can’t think of a better gift to an aspiring author than a year of unbridled access to Get It Write. (Lord knows, that friend does not—I repeat, does not—need more blank notebooks.)1
Another thing that makes an excellent gift: a book! If you’re shopping for a loved one this year, I’ve got some tips:
Choose a book by a BIPOC, disabled, LGBTQ+, or otherwise marginalized author.
True fact: When you buy one of my books, you’re not just helping me (though you are, and I thank you). You’re also telling my publisher you want them to keep publishing books by feminist, queer women. You’re voting with your dollar and reminding them to keep investing in diverse voices. Consumers have so much power!
Get it from an independent bookstore.
Spending $30 via click-to-buy (ahem) means f*ck-all to that company’s bottom line. Spending $30 at an independent bookstore, on the other hand, helps that store keep the lights on. Most shops will ship a book nationwide for a small fee, too.
You can find a bookstore at Indiebound.org, and lists abound to help you ID one owned by whomever you’re most interested in supporting: Black-owned bookstores, queer-owned bookstores, etc. Or order from Bookshop.org, which makes the whole process as simple as, um, that other online-shopping behemoth. (I’ve got some suggestions for you here!)
Get it signed!
Fun fact: Authors loooove signing copies of their book. If a title came out relatively recently, check the author’s website to see where they’ve done events; call up any of those bookstores, and odds are, they’ll have signed copies in stock.
Another option: Head to the author’s social media or Contact Me form and ask if it would be possible to get a signed bookplate in the mail. I’ll happily do this (100% free of charge) for any US mailing address—let me know which book you purchased and whom I should make it out to, and I’ll send you a personalized, sticky-backed bookplate with my John Hancock on it, ready for you to stick inside the book. (And some bookmarks! I have too many bookmarks.)
Happy reading, friends! Go watch Buy Now on Netflix and spend your hard-earned money thoughtfully this season.
With apologies, there’s currently no way to apply the 15% discount to a gift subscription.
